Harrison "Harry" Mills

Late 30s-Early 40s. He's a graduate of Beverly Hills High. He went "back East" for college and has never looked back. He was proud to escape what he perceived as the shallow culture of his upbringing. His viewed his mother's wealth and fame as obstacles to be overcome rather than qualities to be embraced. He has a real do-gooder gene. He met his wife in Africa during his stint in the Peace Corp. He began his career in education in the Teach For America program. (College grads can teach without a certificate in poor/needy school districts.) He has become a rising star in educational circles, managing to turn around a notorious East St. Louis high school into a model school of high achievement. Returning to Beverly Hills was not his ambition; it's simply the hand he's been dealt. He's a loving dad, though his children often find they have to share him with his thousand other "kids." Sometimes his children wish he'd be less of a pal and more of normal dad. Still, they recognize they're in the "lucky" category;


Celia Mills

Late 30s-Early 40s. The jock of the family, Celia won the Bronze Medal in cycling (Individual Pursuit) at the 1988 Olympic games in Seoul. Though she doesn't come right out and say it to her husband, Celia is looking forward to the move from dilapidated East St. Louis to Beverly Hills even though her relationship with her famous mother-in-law is always difficult. Celia's lost a degree of the humanitarian zeal that Harry has managed to maintain. Early in the series, Celia will begin to find work as a personal trainer to various peers/fellow BHHS SPTV050769 parents allowing us another device by which we can insert our regulars into the lives of various guest stars. Celia is the parent who ends up cracking the whip. She loves her husband, but often thinks it must be nice to get to be "the cool one" rather than the one who makes them complete their chores, make it in by curfew, etc. Like her husband, Celia fears what might happen when their kids become "Beverly Hills" kids;


Annie Mills

Legal 18 to play 16. A theater kid...and all that entails. Annie is sensitive. She writes poetry in a journal. She's up on all the obscure emo bands. She's desperate to fit in with the kids who desperately try to appear as though they don't fit in. What's more - she's a very good actress. She seems to have inherited her grandmother's talent. Though she's not outrageous, herself, she's drawn to big personalities. Though she cast the lone vote against his adoption, Annie has become very close with her brother, Dixon. Their interests are completely dissimilar and at their old high school they didn't really run in the same crowd, but here, at Beverly Hills High, they're going to lean on each other more than ever;


Dixon Mills

Legal 18 to play 16, any ethnicity. Harry Mills took a shine to Dixon Cook long before he adopted him. Harry couldn't believe this foster kid was one of the smartest, most determined fifth-graders he'd ever seen. Sure, he had some behavioral problems. He'd get in fights weekly. He'd rarely speak unless asked a direct question. Then, when Dixon got busted for trying to steal a case of milk cartons to take home to his little foster siblings, there was some talk of sending him to an "alternative school" - a notorious place run more like a prison than school. Harry held a family meeting and made the decision to adopt Dixon. He's been a member of the family for six years. Though Dixon can still have a chip on his shoulder, his fighting/bad-boyisms seems to be a thing of the past, and the way he's opened up is nothing short of miraculous. Though he's scary-smart, he possesses no nerd trappings. He can both intimidate Annie's dates and correct their homework;


Tabitha Mills

60-something, though she has claimed "59" for several years. Think Blythe Danner playing a version of Julie Christie. Tabitha Mills was a big star in the 70s. She's been romantically linked with all the usual suspects - Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, Governor Jerry Brown. She's been married a handful of times, though she is currently single. She insists in living on her own in her estate in the Beverly Hills flats. She is the reason her son is moving back home. While Tabitha is fun, vivacious, wicked, acid-tongued, politically incorrect, she's also a lush. Alcohol has always been a problem, and after Tabitha's latest stay at Betty Ford, the facility's administrators called Harry and insisted she needed in-home care and better supervision. Tabitha adores Annie. It's quite possible she sees herself in her granddaughter. In comparison, she tends to count the silverware after her adopted grandson visits. (Or mention how much she loved working with Billy Dee Williams.) Tabitha doesn't understand why Harry (or that wife of his) insists on making their children hold down jobs and earn their own money. ("This isn't Bangkok, Harry");


Silver

Legal 18 to play 16. Born Daphne Silver, this true product of the 21st century has dropped the "Daphne," and - like Madonna, Cher or Paris - opts for a uni-name. Silver, like many of her peers, believes in fame for fame's sake. Her primary talent is her ability to self-promote, shock, provoke, incite. Her self-produced YouTube video series, "Answers to life's inane questions answered by a 15 years old in a bikini" garnered upwards of a half-million hits each. Her ability to pull-off such stunts owes greatly to the lack of a parental figure in the picture. Her mom and stepfather, owners of the Silver Screens movie theater chain, have been "on a cruise" for as long as anyone can remember. Silver shares a swank "above Sunset" mansion with her 24 years old brother, Max. As the friendship between Silver and Annie grows, it will become apparent that Silver is the id and Annie is the ego. Oh, and Dixon makes Silver weak in the knees. It's her Holy Grail to become the only Jewish girl at Beverly Hills High with a black boyfriend;


Max Silver

24ish. Currently, Max is the man of the house, though his control over his wild-child younger sister is suspect. Max is a nose-to-the-grindstone working man who manages the Silver Screens theater at the Century City mall. (This will be one of our go-to locations as Annie will get a job as a concessionaire and the lobby will be a hangout for Beverly Hills kids and parents.) Between "parenting" his sister and running the family business, Max doesn't sleep much. He continually appears to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown. In working in close quarters with her boss, Annie will stumble on clues that, chillingly, make her suspicious that Max may have done away with his own parents. Max is, indeed, hiding a secret regarding the whereabouts of his parents, though we'll be relieved to learn he is not a murderer;


Navid Shirazi

Legal 18 to play 17. Navid is of Middle Eastern descent. He holds one of the most coveted positions of power at Beverly Hills High. He's the executive producer of the journalism department's daily ten minute closedcircuit television newscast. (Half the students who work on the show are in it for the popularity boost; half are there for the serious journalism.) Navid is certainly bright, though his unique talent is his ability to make almost anything happen at Beverly Hills High. He's a consummate politician. In his three years at the school, he has charmed the faculty sponsors of nearly every organization, negotiated quid-pro-quo relationships with the major cliques and cultivated a reputation as an insider. Though Navid is friendly with scores of classmates, he learns he hasn't had a true friend until Dixon enrolls in the television class;


Ethan Ward

Legal 18 to play 16. Though no one will confuse Ethan with a brainiac. He possesses other qualities highly valued in the 90210. Namely, he's beautiful. He's also likable, genuine, a star athlete. (Think Chris Klein circa "Election"). Not surprisingly, Ethan is extraordinarily popular. Or at least he's popular until minute 15 of the pilot when his girlfriend absolutely destroys him at her decadent Sweet 16 party. (She includes a bound tome of puppy-doggish emails sent from Ethan to the teacher he loves in each of the 500 gift bags she hands out at her party). It's in the aftermath of this bloodletting Ethan falls in with a new crowd - our crowd;


Naomi Bennett

Legal 18 to play 16. Naomi is the super-hot, super-rich, high-maintenance girlfriend of Ethan Ward. At least she's his girlfriend until she exacts her painfully public revenge. In early episodes, Naomi will seem to function as a stock, spoiled bitch from hell, but over time, she'll reveal herself as a more textured character. Her impossible parents will routinely be in Principal Ward's office demanding more and better for their daughter. By the time she's gotten over her Ethan heartbreak and is ready to take him back, she'll discover that his attention has turned to Annie Mills. (Posted: March 24, 2008)

CW Gets Medical Treatment From 'American Idol' Creator!

With The CW teaming up with the creator of "American Idol," you'd think a reality competition show would be in the works. Wrong.

The green network will explore the popular medical genre with a pilot from "Idol" creator Simon Fuller, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The project, titled "Austin Golden Hour" is a real-time hourlong drama that follows a team of young -- and suitably CW attractive -- emergency room surgeons and EMTs in the hectic and critical 60 minutes following a trauma.. As with any good drama, the workplace action will combine with the characters' personal interactions that include their love lives, jealousies and rivalries.

Lance Gentile ("Third Watch," "ER") and Mal Young ("Doctor Who") wrote the pilot.

Besides "Idol," Fuller is also the executive producer behind "So You Think You Can Dance," the "S Club 7" series, and on the big screen, "From Justin to Kelly" and "Spice World."

The CW Sows 'Farmer' in the Spring!

Animal husbandry gets applied to humans on The CW in April.

The CW network announced that it will debut its reality series "Farmer Wants a Wife" on Wednesday, April 30 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. On the show, a lonely farm boy looks for love with a city girl.

Ten city gals vie for the affections of a hard-working farmer who has it all -- except for a woman to call his own. Fish-out-of-water challenges, group activities that may or may not include barnyard animals and cozy, bucolic dates create the wacky action in this comedic series.

"Farmer Wants a Wife" will follow the 10th cycle of "America's Next Top Model" on Wednesdays.

The new reality series is already yet another transplant from overseas. The established international hit ranks as the top show in its timeslot in Australia, France, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Belgium and The Netherlands.

The 'WB' Returns...Sort of?

Warner Bros. Television Group plans to resurrect The WB television network in the form of a new Web site. On the site, whose working title is wb.com, users will be able to catch free streaming episodes of all WB-produced series airing on the net during its 1995-2006 run, including "Gilmore Girls," "Everwood" and "What I Like About You."

It was not immediately known whether WB shows produced by outside studios--among them, "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer," "Felicity" and "Dawson?s Creek"--would be featured, or whether current Warner Bros. series airing on WB's successor The CW, such as "Gossip Girl," would appear on the site. Sources told Mediaweek that wb.com will be ad-supported and that, in addition to offering past WB series, the site will feature new, short series and vignettes targeting the old WB audience, primarily women 12-34.

Each episode will reportedly run 5 minutes, with 10 installments slated. Sources said wb.com will have a beta launch next month, with a major rollout planned for this fall. One source called wb.com Warner Bros.? version of Hulu, the joint NBC Universal/News Corp. Web venture offering premium video content from both companies and others.

"We're in the process of developing several Warner Bros.-branded Web destinations and will announce all the details in the coming weeks," Warner Bros. TV Group said in a statement, stopping short of confirming specifics.

The WB and UPN networks merged to form The CW in the 2006-07 TV season, but several WB shows that moved over to the new CW lost audience.

The CW & WWE: Part Ways!

The CW is getting out of the ring, parting ways with the WWE's "Smackdown" franchise after failing to reach a new deal with the wrestling org.

WWE announced the split late Thursday night, saying it had been "in negotiations" with other nets since last week. CW's exclusive negotiating frame with WWE ended Jan. 31. "Smackdown" will end its run at the end of the 2007-08 season.

There was no immediate word on where "Smackdown" might land, but cabler USA might be a logical home. It already has a relationship with the WWE.

NBC has also aired some primetime grappling, but a weekly franchise might be off-brand for the network, one insider said.

"After a successful decade of 'Smackdown' on both UPN and the CW, World Wrestling Entertainment and the CW have agreed to conclude our partnership," WWE said in a statement explaining the move. Org did not give a reason for the decision.

With the WWE and CW at odds over deal points, it's believed CW execs had begun telling its stations that a deal might not make, people familiar with the situation said. Rather than wait for rumors to begin leaking out, WWE apparently opted to get the news out first.

CW (and previously UPN) execs had mixed feelings about the WWE franchise. "Smackdown" consistently delieved solid ratings for the network and its UPN predecessor since 1999, giving the net a pulse on weak nights such as Friday. "Smackdown" also filled two hours of programming, allowing CW to focus on fewer nights.

On the other hand, wrestling didn't always fit in with the femme focus the CW has tried to cultivate via hits such as "Gossip Girl" and "America's Next Top Model."

Still, given the CW's difficulties generating big ratings with scripted shows, losing "Smackdown" will present problems for the young net.

WWE was careful to word its statement without any sharp comments, even going so far as to praise CBS Corp. supremo Leslie Moonves and CW chief Dawn Ostroff. A CW rep couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

With the writers strike nearing an end, it looks as if there will be a pilot season this year after all -- but it won't be the pilot season we've all grown to love and hate.

There will be fewer pilots and there might be more projects ordered straight to series. But there are more tactical twists in store at the broadcast networks.

For instance, CBS and CW are expected to do a lot more presentations in lieu of full-blown pilots this year, especially on the drama side. Presentations are shorter than pilots, faster to make and cheaper for the networks that order them.

The quicker turnaround is said to have been key to CBS' and CW's decisions to go with presentation-heavy slates this year given the time constraints of a truncated pilot season. But sources stress that this is not a long-term development strategy, and the networks will be evaluating their development options on a project-by-project basis.

CBS, CW and Fox have been consistent in ordering presentations as part of their pilot mix. (Fox reportedly also contemplated a switch to more presentations early in the strike but is now said to be leaning toward sticking with the traditional pilot format.)

CBS' promising freshman series "Moonlight" was ordered as a presentation last season. Also a result of a presentation order was the network's long-running family drama "Judging Amy."

Still, studios generally are not fond of the presentation model because they get a lower license fee but their costs are close to what they spend on a full pilot.

The lower license fee limits the networks' financial risk in case they don't pick up the project. But, because of their length, successful presentations have to be reshot before going to series. This proved beneficial to "Moonlight," which was reconceptualized and recast in the summer.

Overall, "the networks save money in failure, so you get the feeling they are sometimes rooting for (the presentations) to fail," a studio source said.

For that reason, negotiating a pilot license fee normally takes longer for a presentation order, and studios sometimes decline the order altogether.

But faced with the post-strike realities of network development where U.S. broadcasters are reaching abroad for cost-efficient series, presentations might not be such a bad alternative.

Add to that NBC's much-touted straight-to-series strategy, which might not be a bonanza for studios either, should it involve more six-episode orders like the one handed out to comedy "Kath & Kim" this week. If they are not vertically integrated, as is the case with "Kath & Kim's" network and producing studio, studios don't always accept six-episode pickups; they're a much harder international sell than 13-episode orders.

Still, an episodic order is better than a pilot order. Which brings us to the one certain thing this strike-impacted pilot season that everyone is cheering about -- there will be fewer pilots.

For years, studios have sounded the alarm about the spiraling cost of network pilots. Now NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker and his News Corp. counterpart Peter Chernin have vowed to do fewer pilots, as few as five or six a year for NBC.

So, will NBC be ordering any more pilots this development season, since it already has handed out eight pilot and four straight-to-series orders? Pilots include comedies "Zip," "Man of Your Dreams" and "Father Ted" and dramas "The Watch" (on which NBC recently passed), the Luke Reiter project (EDIT: "Play Or Be Played"), "Blue Blood," the movie/backdoor pilot "Knight Rider" and "Kings" and series "Kath," "Robinson Crusoe," "The Philanthropist" and "Fear Itself."

What makes things even more intriguing is that NBC was the only broadcast network not to terminate any of its pilot scripts because of the strike, so it has plenty from which to choose.

Fox has two pilots completed, comedy "Hackett" and drama "The Oaks," with J.J. Abrams' "Fringe" shooting and "The FBI" casting.

In another cost- and time-saving move that the networks can adopt in the post-strike world, Fox ordered a table read for animated comedy "The Pitts" and will make a series pickup decision based on that.

CBS' also has several traditional pilots ordered before the strike -- dramas "Eleventh Hour" and "The Meant to Be's" and comedies "My Best Friend's Girl" and "Worst Week" -- while CW has made no orders so far. ABC has four pilots in different stages of production, dramas "Life on Mars" and "The More Things Change" and comedies "Cedric the Entertainer" and "Literary Superstars."

Talk of settlement puts contingency plans into high gear

After a three-month lull, agents' phones began ringing off the hook again Monday as word about an imminent end to the writers strike spread around Hollywood during the weekend.

The talks are still in the exploratory stage since the deal between the writers and the studios is still being finalized, but contingency plans put in place by the TV networks and studios will have existing series return on the air on average four weeks (for multicamera comedies) to six weeks (for dramas) after the official end of the strike.

How quickly each show can go back to production depends on the condition of the scripts started before the strike. The prep time needed is said to be two weeks for multicamera comedies and four weeks for more elaborate productions.

However, networks are not expected to ask every series to produce more episodes this season, which doesn't necessarily mean that those shows will be automatically canceled.

"Each network needs to decide what shows it needs for the rest of the season," one network executive said.

Some freshman and bubble series and heavily serialized dramas may not do more original episodes this season but would get pickups for next fall to give the creative team time to work on them, some sources said. Among the series rumored to possibly resume production in the summer are NBC's serialized hit "Heroes," which could do an extended run next season, and ABC's promising freshman "Pushing Daisies."

However, others cautioned that the networks may want to get more episodes of all of their series in the can as a contingency in case of a SAG strike in the summer.

Fox's "24" is among the shows expected to go back to production first. Despite the fact that the real-time drama won't air new episodes this season, it will ramp up production quickly to avoid losing some of the actors needed for the entire 24-episode arc whose options will be up soon.

Also expected to resume production quickly are ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," "Lost," "Desperate Housewives" and "Brothers & Sisters"; CBS' "CSI" franchise, "Without a Trace" and "Cold Case"; and such multicamera comedies as CBS' "Two and a Half Men" and "The Big Bang Theory" and Fox's " 'Til Death."

NBC's "The Office" has a script ready to shoot as production on the episode, which was slated to film the first week of the strike, was shut down because star Steve Carell refused to cross the picket line.

The end of the strike also will bring resolution to low-rated freshman series whose future was put in limbo because of the strike. No orders are expected for new episodes of such series as ABC's "Big Shots," CBS' "Cane," NBC's "Journeyman" and Fox's "K-Ville," though some sources indicated the jury is still out on "Cane," which has several scripts ready.

Things are murkier on the development front. All broadcast networks except NBC terminated a portion of their development last month, citing lesser needs because of the strike. The broadcast networks can still opt for a truncated pilot season, but by the time the strike is over, they will be at a point where they will have normally ordered all their pilots. To get pilots up and running, the nets will have to rely heavily on first drafts since very few scripts had been delivered before the work stoppage.

A few pilots, including Fox's "The Oaks" and NBC's movie/backdoor pilot "Knight Rider," were filmed during the strike. Several more, including NBC's "The Man of Your Dreams" and Fox's dramas "The FBI" and "Saint of Circumstance," are slated to go into production shortly after the strike ends.

Additionally, studios are prepping pitches to go out as soon as the strike is over.

An imminent end to the strike would mean virtually no disruption of cable networks' scheduling plans.

Should the strike end in the next month or so, writing would start right away on TNT's "The Closer" and "Saving Grace," which would be back on track for their summer runs as originally scheduled.

As for USA, a spokesperson said that the network's summer programming also would remain pretty much intact if the strike ends over the next few weeks. Premiere dates for certain shows likely have to be pushed back but only by a few weeks.

With the second season of "The Tudors" wrapped, filming on "Brotherhood," "Dexter" and "Californication" not scheduled to begin until June and "Weeds" in production with a waiver for producer Lionsgate, Showtime's filming schedule also won't be affected.

The CW CANCELS: Online Nation!

Four weeks into the fall season, the first casualty finally drops: The CW has pulled its user-generated video clip show “Online Nation” from its Sunday night slot. The CW will replace “Nation” with repeats of sitcom “Aliens in America.”

The most recent episode of “Nation” earned a 0.2 rating among adults 18 to 49. That number matched its lead-in, magazine show “CW Now.” But “Now” was pre-sold under a unique commercial-free sponsorship arrangement with Mediavest that has helped protect the show.

“Aliens” got off to a rough start in The CW’s Monday night comedy block, but this week showed some ratings growth in key demos.

Fox has also pulled a show from its schedule, the docu-soap reality series “Nashville,” but the network claimed the series will return in November.

CW Springs to Isaac Mizrahi's 'Collection'

With the success of "America's Next Top Model," The CW is developing more fashion programming with the help of Isaac Mizrahi.

The designer will co-executive produce for the network "The Collection," a one-hour scripted project based on his experiences, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Elisa Bell ("Little Black Book"), who will write and executive produce the show, will use the fashion world as a backdrop to address issues such as "racism, giant egos, fragile relationships, drugs, conflict of ethics and sexuality," said Bell, adding, "The fashion world operates in our show as a microcosm of American society. Regardless of how you feel about fashion, everyone is a member of the club, because at the start of every day, we all get dressed."

ABC Studio and Sander/Moses Productions will produce. Ian Sander and Kim Moses are planning a cross-platform approach similar to what they did for their CBS supernatural drama "Ghost Whisperer," in which they brought in an online component.

Mizrahi, 46, is a top designer who briefly had his own self-titled show on the Style Network, appeared in a cameo for "Ugly Betty" and has performed rather controversial red carpet duties for E! on occasion. He also has designs featured at Target.

The CW network was launched last fall (2006), and since then some cancellations have been made. Legend shows like 7th Heaven and Gilmore Girls have ended this year and that takes a huge toll off the CW as those included a fixed number of viewers. "Gilmore Girls" was actually seen as one of the strongest shows on the CW but after negotiation problems, the girls decided to call it an end. Another show cancelled was UPN's original sitcom "All of Us".

Now the CW has a one year experience under its belt, and has actually introduced a couple of shows this year that will be coming back next fall. "Runaway" was a new show, but didn't make the cut and was cancelled after only its first 3 episodes. But the NEW shows that are coming back are "The Game" & "The Search For The Next Doll".

But who knows what The CW will bring next. Its original lineups include Smallville, One Tree Hill, Supernatural, Americas Next Top Model, Beauty & The Geek, WWE Smackdown, Girlfriends, and Everybody Hates Chris. And this fall we will be seeing a lot of new shows coming up and alot of buzz around Gossip Girl, Reaper & Life is Wild, as well as a new sitcom called Aliens In America.
