TV Hot Spot: Brothers & Sisters

Brothers & Sisters Episode 9: Mistakes Were Made Part 2

Review by: Sal

Hey everyone. Another review coming your way. And this time from another ABC show called "Brothers & Sisters". Now this show is on its first season, and I have to admit that at first I wasn't too keen on this series, and decided not to watch it. But after the mixed reviews which it recieved and the great ratings, thanks to its lead-in show Desperate Housewives, this show has become another one of this seasons hits. So obviously, beginning with the ratings for this weeks episode, episode 9 scored a 8.9/14. That means that there were around 12.6 million viewers watching it. Of course looking at the viewers of its lead in (Desperate Housewives) the show did lose around 6 Million of its viewers (-32%). Although, on the bright side, Brothers & Sisters accomplished to survive the fall season and have been picked up for a full season. So lets get on with the review...

Last week, Justin was called in for the army. He had just come back from Afghanistan and is now called for Iraq. Obviously the mother, Nora, finds this news very disturbing. Even though she does find out in the end. Justin only tells his brothers and then decides to over-dose himself which eventually leads him going into the emergency room. This week, Justin is recovering in his mothers home, and this to me was a good sign, at first I thought that there might be a chance that Justin will be staying and not have to go to war. Maybe with his condition he would be able to stay. But obviously we soon find out that, that is not the case. Justin has to report to the army in 2 weeks. Which initially he comes to terms with at the end. I am wondering now how they will work out that storyline. Obviously Justin will be going, but I would like to see how the writers get to work around that.

The thing about this series which I love, is the family-oriented cover that it has. Of course it is a family drama, but the interaction between the characters and their outstanding acting skills make you believe in that they are 'real' Brothers and Sisters. In this episode, Sarah, Thomas and Kevin go out on a road trip. Remember in the last episode, Sarah finally unlocked the password to her fathers secret vault. So in this weeks episode they go and actually find out that there is a piece of land out there which is worth over 30 million dollars. I was relieved when I found that out, because I felt the family has gone through enough pain and especially their company has been suffering badly so now that they obtain this money, they might be able to get things back to the way things were.

Calista Flockhart, obviously plays Kitty Walker. Amazing actress, especially in this series. She plays the role very well I might add. In this episode she does something which I didnt expect again. Seeing her 'bargain' with a senator in order to save her brother from going to war. Thinking from a more political point of view, I would see why that would be unethical, but at the same time I feel that Kitty was desperate and needed to stop it from happening. The part which annoyed me is when Amber went and told on Kitty. At that part I felt like smacking the girl on the head. Although, she was right in the end...

In the end of the episode it was also nice to see that both Kitty and her mom Nora took the blame for Justin enrolling for the war in the first place. The fact that they both realise it was a mistake and Justin coming in and saying it was the 'best and worst decision in his life' really made me confused about if he is going to the war to make a point. That, he in fact, is not the baby of the family. Or is he going to war for the main cause of it, to fight for his country??

I am looking forward to the next episode. I would like to see what the writers do with the 'Rebecca' storyline. Or should I say the 'Half-Sister' storyline. I loved the part where Sarah tells her two brothers, Thomas and Kevin about their new half-sister and telling them that they do not want to get involved. It was an emotional scene, especially for Sarah. And I cant wait to see how this evolves into something more...

Ok! So that is all for now...My third review and I think I am doing alright. Anyway, I would like to here your comments and thoughts about the episode or even the series as a whole. It would actually be really interesting to see what you guys think will happen in the near future. This is your TV Hot Spot Host (Sal).

Take Care
