TV Hot Spot: Dirt
Dirt 1x01: Pilot
Review by: Sal & Shai
Sal: Hey guys, I am here with Shai and we are about to review the pilot episode for a new FX series called "Dirt". And because of heavy promotion the pilot brought in around 3.4 Million Viewers, and an additional 1.6 Million Viewers watched the replay of the pilot which aired right after. These numbers matched the premiere another FX series, "Nip Tuck" which just finished their fourth season. So I am guessing that this is a good sign for the series and hopefully it will continue to match up as the episodes go by. My first thoughts of the pilot...its Different...
Shai: Different? (lol). Well I loved it. When I first saw the previews of the show and that it was on the FX network I was expecting a bit of "Nip Tuck" in it, and I was right. It was interesting, and kept you wanting to watch till the end. It was a long premiere but I am glad I watched the whole thing. Courtney is perfect in it, and when I watched it I was like "She is the opposite of Monica on Friends" (lol)
Sal: Well the cast was unique. Courtney Cox...I never thought I would see her in this role and I am seriously thinking that she might win a few awards for it. She plays a hard-ass and a very strong business woman whom you wouldn't want to mess with. In the pilot, two of her employees were messing around while she was having a meeting and she got one of them fired on the spot and told the other one she has a week to convince her not to fire her. That was brutal to watch. As the episode goes by you see the writers explaining this character and her life. How she turned into the way she is...an Ice Queen...
Shai: An Ice Queen...maybe....But she does get the job done. I think that is what people understand from this series, its the fact that Lucy does her job right and does it good. Yes she gets down and dirty but that is just her, and that is apparently what sells magazines. In this pilot we get introduced to a couple of celebrities and Lucy automatically plans the whole plot really well, she uses her skills and gets the story she wants.
Sal: Evil...yet brilliant! (lol) The cast members in the episode were somewhat weird. The only two that I think were the main characters of the series were Lucy & Don. Not sure if the others will return or if they were there for the pilot alone. Apparently to a website I had visited the characters seen in this pilot will return in the next episode. When I first watched the series, the thing that caught my eye, besides the cast, was the effects that were used in the opening of the pilot. Shai you mentioned this earlier didn't you?
Shai: Oh yah. I did mention it. In the opening of the pilot, you see Lucy walking around and with every celebrity she sees she has a picture image of how it would look on the front cover of one of her magazines. I thought it was amazing and was a really good effect used in the series. I hope they use it more often because I loved the opening. She looks at a celebrity thats eating too much and claims that she has weight issues etc. Its funny!
Sal: So I guess we can round up the review. I mean to be honest, this is the first FX series I watch so to me it was different like I said before. To judge this series and to see if I like it I guess I would just have to watch more episodes of it. But what I already know, from previous statistics is that this show had a very strong opening and will hopefully continue on...because if it does then it will be claimed a hit, in critical terms....
Shai: (lol) Well I loved it and will continue to watch it no-matter what. Thanks for reading everyone and as most of you can see the site has really changed since its opening, with different things put in different places and various effects used throughout the site. I personally thank you (Sal) for it because the site is amazing. Oh and our visitor numbers are soaring so lets cross our fingers to see if we can hit a new high! Thanks again everyone!
Take Care
