TV Hot Spot: The Singles Table

The Singles Table Episode 1: Pilot

Review by: Sal

Well I just watched the pilot. And I had to force myself to watch the whole thing. What can I say, sometimes you are a hit, and sometimes...your not! This one, doesnt rank high in my books. First I just wanted to thank one of our commenters for correcting me in one of my previews in that Alicia Sylverstone has replaced the role of "Georgia". Although I doubt that will help at all. So I think that I should go threw the pilot bit by bit, and compliment/criticize different aspects of it, which fall under my grand conclusion of "The Singles Table" NOT being funny...

First the setting. What I liked, and what I appreciated from the writers is that they introduced us into a new style of comedy. Usually with comedy sitcoms we have just a normal setting, but this one, you actually saw a bit of action and movement instead of just staying in one set and then moving onto another one for the next 5 minutes. So I have to give a thumbs up for that idea...

Second, the lines. Ugh the lines. The jokes were not funny, some of them were, but they were a type of funny where your sitting there thinking "What?! What does that mean?". The overall writing and collaboration that the writers have the characters do were not humurous. I was sitting in my seat and actually feeling akward for the 'Single' characters which had to go through all of that shame. But then again, I think that was the creators point. It just didnt pass me as amusing...

Another thing I want to poke at is the cast. Bad, bad choices. I didnt find the characters funny, and I didnt like how they played out the role. I think Ivan was trying too hard, and the other characters werent trying as hard. It was a mix really, but in the end they didnt deliver to their parts as I would have hoped. The addition of Alicia Sylverstone might just be the saviour of this show. And I am hoping for that, because I see a lot of potential on this show if they can just get it right! Thanks for reading guys. Next up is the "One Tree Hill" Review by me & Shai. So look out for that!

Take care
