ABC Chops Down 'Men In Trees'!

ABC has gone and canceled one of TV's most consistently heartwarming hours, Men in Trees.

The sad, depressing news was just confirmed to me by series creator Jenny Bicks, who says she was informed of the network's decision late last week. "I am really proud of the work we did on MIT," she tells me. "A huge thank you to our supportive fans."

Bicks believes that two years of schizophrenic scheduling ultimately did the cherished dramedy in. "I wish the show had not been moved six times and put onto two long hiatuses," she sighs. "No show could survive that."

Truer words have never been spoken.

As soul-crushing as this is, I managed to find a silver lining in all this: Viewers will get their happy ending.

Bicks and her team prepared for Trees' possible demise by shooting an alternate series-finale ending that will now be tacked onto the show's last episode, which is slated to air this summer. Trees kicks off its final run of episodes on Wednesday, May 28.

'October Road,' 'Men in Trees' Seek New Homes!

It doesn't necessarily means that they're on the verge of cancellation, but ABC dramas "October Road" and "Men in Trees" are reportedly seeking new homes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC sent tapes of both bubble shows to Lifetime, but the trade paper says that the cable network has already ruled out picking up either series.

What will be the next option for "October Road" and "Men in Trees"?

"October Road" is in particular danger. After spending its first season in the safe confines of Thursday nights at 10 p.m. after "Grey's Anatomy," frequently drawing over 10 million viewers per episode, the coming-of-age drama moved to ABC's Monday 10 p.m. trouble spot this year. After premiering with just over 6 million viewers, the show has been struggling to reach 5 million viewers in recent weeks and its last two episodes, airing on March 10, averaged a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demo.

Fans have already begun the requisite Save-our-Show campaign.

And can anybody say with absolutely certainty what day or time "Men in Trees" is on? It's our job to know and we aren't totally sure. Either blessed or cursed with a seemingly endless supply of episodes in the can, "Men in Trees" has bounced around ABC's schedule as if floating on a whim, delivering a less-than-impressive 1.7 demo rating for its March 12 episode.

Because of its proven scheduling versatility and the show's relative star-power, "Men in Trees" is said to have a better chance of renewal than "October Road."

The final word on both shows won't come down until ABC presents its fall line-up to advertisers at its upfront presentation in May.

Ausiello: Yep, and some of it's good, while some of it's, well, less good. The sucky news is that the ratings haven't been great since the show returned. On the plus side, Trees' small but feverishly loyal audience has been growing over the past two weeks — and, given the across-the-board erosion we're seeing these days, that's pretty miraculous. Let's hope the numbers continue to inch upward and series creator Jennie Bicks doesn't have to use the alternate, series finale ending she shot for this season's last episode.

Corinna from Orange, California: Can you tease anything for this week's Men in Trees episode? I would be forever grateful to know that Jack is still alive and kicking!


Well, the title "Sonata in Three Parts" is a clear indication for what is going to happen with this episode. See, the three parts of a sonata include a lively beginning, i.e., Anne Heche's Marin is Martha Stewart-ing up a storm hiding her true feelings over Jack's disappearance; the second part is the dark and murky section, which is the aftermath of the search for Jack. And finally, the third section always brings it back to the beginning. Let's hope it's all adagio soon. Next week: Aspects of ostinato in How I Met Your Mother.



Katherine from Chicago: I love your TV scoop, but I am a little concerned with the fate of Jack on Men in Trees. What's going to happen to our sailor friend? Your insight on this show would be great!
