ABC Re-Ups Reality Series!

ABC has picked up "Dancing with the Stars" and four other unscripted series, solidifying its schedule for 2008-09.

"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "Supernanny," "Wife Swap" and "America's Funniest Home Videos" will all return next season as well. The reality-show orders come on the heels of nine scripted-series pickups for the fall, giving ABC a good measure of stability in a year when pilot development is likely to be more unpredictable than usual.

Missing from the list is "The Bachelor," although odds of that show returning are probably pretty good as well. A new edition of the show is scheduled to begin in mid-March, and its spin-off "The Bachelorette" will be back in the summer.

None of the pickups is a huge surprise. "Dancing with the Stars" trails only FOX's "American Idol" in total viewers this season and is also a top 10 show in the key adults 18-49 demographic. "EM: Home Edition" also ranks in the top 20 among total viewers and adults 18-49.

The overall ratings for the other three shows are more middle-of-the-pack but have been solid utility players for the network. "Videos" runs second to "60 Minutes" in its Sunday timeslot, while "Supernanny" and "Wife Swap" have both improved their time periods over the corresponding nights last season.

Supernanny Gets Male Spin-Off

ABC has ordered a pilot for a spinoff to its reality series “Supernanny,” sources say.

The project puts a gender twist on the familiar “Supernanny” format. This time, a male child-care worker will take a tough-love approach to fixing chaotic households.

The working title is, yes, "Supermanny."

The pilot was ordered from Ricochet, the U.K. company that produced the original series and last summer’s “Fat March” for the network.

ABC ordered “Supermanny” before the writers strike, so it wasn’t initially a move to replace scripted content. However, the work stoppage could arguably help any reality project to eventually receive a series order.

ABC has the largest stock of scripted inventory going into the strike. On the unscripted front, “Dancing With the Stars” is a reality titan whose ratings are bested only by Fox's “American Idol.” “The Bachelor” and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” continue to perform well, with “Wife Swap” and “Supernanny” considered solid (the latter averaging a 3.5 rating last season among adults 18 to 49).

The network has struggled this past year to add new unscripted hits, however, trying out more than a dozen freshman reality shows, including “Fast Cars and Superstars,” “The Ex-Wives Club” and “Shaq’s Big Challenge.”

ABC picks up 'Supernanny,' 'Wife Swap,' 'Videos'

Families with especially bratty children, a desire to switch spouses or just adorable video footage of your cat, do not despair: There's still a place for you on ABC.

The network announced Friday that it's picking up three of its unscripted series -- "Supernanny," "Wife Swap" and "America's Funniest Home Videos" -- for the 2007-08 season. All three shows pull down decent if unspectacular ratings, with "Swap" and "Supernanny" holding down the fort on Monday nights and "Videos" filling in wherever it's needed.

ABC hasn't made a decision about next season for its other reality series. "Dancing with the Stars" and "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," both of which are top-25 shows, seem like pretty sure bets. The 10th edition of "The Bachelor" is scheduled to air in the spring, but beyond that its prospects are uncertain.

"America's Funniest Home Videos," currently in its 17th season, is the longest-running prime-time entertainment program in ABC's history (though its 17 years aren't consecutive; it was off the air between 1999 and 2001). It's drawing 9.5 million viewers per week on Sundays this season, up a little from last year's 9.1 million, and has also filled in on Tuesday and Friday nights.

Ratings for "Supernanny," in its third year, are also up this season. It averages 8.12 million viewers per week opposite the likes of "Heroes" and "24" on Mondays, an improvement of about 600,000 over 2005-06.

The overall numbers for "Wife Swap" have fallen to 7.32 million this season from 8.27 million last year.
